Altering Chopsticks Into YaYa Hair Sticks ~ Jewelry for your hair
December 6, 2007

About a year ago, I closed down a booth in one store and moved into another. Somewhere in the process of all that, I forgot all about some chopstick hair sticks I had made for the previous shop. I was looking for tape and I ran into these guys, so I thought I would share.

I acquired a brand new package of ivory chopsticks from a garage sale. I know they are plentiful, but I love the ivory color and the writing on the side. I stored them away not knowing what I wanted to do with them. One day I had an idea for making hair jewelry. Swarovski crystals were prominently displayed at a gem show I attended, so I bought a few and started experimenting.
I cut off the top of the chopstick with the images and writing, drilled into the top of the chopsticks and attached bead caps and crystals on headpins with a strong adhesive.

I made quite a few of them. Then I started experimenting with some other items, like recycled jewelry. Below is a set I made from recycled earrings.

I found a vintage image, named my hair sticks, YaYa Hair Sticks and gave them a catch phrase, Jewelry for your hair. You can see my packaging in the photo below.

Since I forgot about them for a year, I’m going to start listing them at my etsy store for closeout prices, under $10. I figure they’ll make great stocking stuffers.

Thank you. It’s always great to meet another recycle artist. I’m on vacation right now. I’ll look at your site when I get back.
