Nest

I started this bird nest project with the idea that I would not buy anything, just use materials I had around the house.  I really need to destash, recycle and reuse.  I don’t have nests laying around the house.  I decided to try to make one from scratch…just like the birds.  You can see my final nest above.

Here’s the bottom side of my nest with all the little twigs sticking out.

Nest Materials

This is what I found around my home. I realize that because I do a lot of crafting, model making and art, I may have a bit more than most people.  I also have some things that are probably not available to a bird, like the bark wrapped wire in the upper left.  I used the wire to make a swirl that I used for a foundation to my nest.  I tied the string around the wire to hold my structure in place.  I weaved the twigs through my string and wire frame.  As a final touch I added some raw wool and a little bit of colored straw.

While I was putting together my nest, I kept wondering how the birds do it.  They don’t have fingers and thumbs to tie knots…Of course I don’t have a beak.  By creating my own nest, I’ve gained a lot of respect for the craftiness of birds.

Now I have to decide if I want to embellish my nest a little bit more.  Later… now I’m working on my bird.

Hey nice blog could you help me out in making a good artifitial nest, like we make for pigeons. Will the birds stay to our premises?

  2. I don’t know how to make nests birds might use. I think you need to talk to a bird expert.

could you help me making a nest for my birds cause they are not comfortable

  4. I don’t know if a real bird would like the nests I made. I didn’t realize that there was a need for artificial nests. I suppose you could try making one like the one I made and see if it works or you could give your birds some soft material, like wool.

If you have a special request, you can submit a request at my etsy shop, http://www.perpetualplum.etsy.com.
