Nightstands outside

Today I’ve been trying to finish up some of the furniture for our bedroom.  We have a large master bedroom.  My sewing space is in the bedroom.  I started the projects for the room in early fall.   Because of some shuffling of spaces and some over-enthusiastic gardening on my husband’s part (long story), I’ve been only painting on warmer days. I’m finally finishing up some of my painted furniture.

I call these The Twins…no laughing.   We replaced our old bed with a platform bed a while back.  The nightstands, which had looked fine, were suddenly looking pretty dinky.  We found the two nightstands above at a garage sale.

Nightstands before

Above is a photo of the nightstands in September before I started painting.  They had a pretty funky pegboard bottom that was sagging.  The shelf inside was covered with contact paper.  They hadn’t been primed before being painted white, so the stain was showing through the white paint.  The price was great.

I did prime the nightstands with KillZ before I painted several coats of latex paint.  I found the can of blue paint in the Whoops section of Home Depot.  Since they are still down in the dining room, you’ll just have to take me at my word when I say they match the bedroom colors.

I added a leftover board to the bottom.  I peeled off the contact paper and painted the shelf white.  They need just a tad more touching up before I put them in the bedroom.  With them in the room I’ll have a bit more storage and a little bit of blue on both sides of the room.

I’m not a big fan of furniture stores.  To get the same quality of furniture as I can find at an estate or garage sale, I would have to spend hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars.  I like the look of the vintage pieces.  I also like that I didn’t have to spend a fortune furnishing my bedroom.  I want my room to look and feel cozy.  Painting my furniture allows me to cozy up my space.

  1. :-D I don’t think we have a new piece of furniture in our house…love estate & yard sale furniture!

And I like those tables too!

And the checkered floor they’re standing on!

  2. LOL. That’s the dining room floor. The bedroom, where they will go, is carpeted.

Wow! You did a wonderful job!! I love these and would pay a pretty price for them, even though like you, I am a constant bargain scourer of thrift shops, estate & yard sales. Great work!

  4. Thank you, Karen. I’ve seen some really wonderful furniture at garage and estate sales. My house is full of bargains I found as well.
