Free-Form Crochet A Great Way to Use up Scraps of Yarn
June 30, 2008
It has been unbearably hot here. We’ve been very busy with cleaning up after all the guests have left, i.e. lots of laundry, restocking groceries, straightening up rooms, and general cleaning. In the evenings I’ve been sitting down and doing a little bit of crochet and I guess a little bit of recycling…
I have a lot of scraps of yarn and thread of all different weights. I decided to do some free-form crochet. In particular, I decided to make a flower garden. I’m going to do some embellishing/altering. The flowers above will be washed and starched. First though I have some more flowers and leaves to finish.
I have several crochet books. This is a book I bought a while back, it’s called Fun with Free-Form Crochet by Margaret Hubert. It was published in 2004 by Annie’s Attic. I originally bought this book because I thought I would make a free-form tea cozy (No, the pattern is not in the book) using ideas from the book. I never did make that tea cozy!
I was going to make some thread crochet flowers using a vintage pattern book I own. When I looked at my stock of yarns and realized I had a lot of baby weight yarn, I decided the baby weight yarn would work great. The baby weight yarn scraps are just a little harder to use up than the worsted weight scraps.
I’m on my way to my flower garden. It may take me a little while to finish because I’m only working on it in the evenings. I have a lot of time to think about my design and other embellishments. During the day I have a few other projects in the works.

That Oriental poppy is beautiful. Can’t wait to see your flower garden when it’s all planted…

Thanks Michelle. I’m hoping to get back to that garden soon. J is keeping me busy with her craft ideas.
