Close Picture of Bird Nest Pincushion

I joined the crazyaboutpincushions yahoo group and dove right in with my first exchange.  The exchange was an anything goes pincushion and stick pin exchange.  I decided to convert a metal candle holder into a one of a kind pin cushion using scrap fabrics, trims and lace.   You can see that I decorated the bottom of the candle holder base with beaded fringe and lace heart trim.

The pincushion is a ball shape. The bird’s nest is made from a tea-stained tulle and strings of faux pearls.  I surrounded the nest with lace and flowers. The bird is a simple pattern.  I made the bird a needle sharpener by filling it with emery grain.  The feathers on the bird are real.  I used a feathered ribbon for his wings and tail.

The stick pin was actually a vintage pin with a glass top. I added a spring cup to accent the glass and a pretty metal bead cap to create a flower.

I never know what to expect on my first exchange with a group.  I know my exchange partner is new to the group as well.  I hope she likes her new pincushion.

  1. Dang it woman! You’re good!

    I LOVE IT!

If you made one, without the birdie, how much would you charge?

Do you have any sage green fabric? With cream accents? Or maybe a cutter quilt piece?

  2. I have so much fabric I could make one in just about any color you want. I’ll pull out some fabrics and a candle holder and get back to you next week. Right now I’m knee deep in garage sale stuff.

  3. BTW, Thank you…and I’d have to decorate it a bit. I wouldn’t feel right otherwise.

  4. Big sigh…still wish I can go to your garage sale. :)

Sue, I love the pincushion and what a neat idea of the bird for the sharpener. Really awesome!

    Sue,
This is just beautiful! I am taking part in my first swap on crazyaboutpincushions, also – the Round Robin. I hope to enjoy it, but I sure don’t have your talent. I’ll check out your etsy shop next and will be sure to check your blog regularly. Great site.

  7. Thank you Evelyn. I’m not doing the Round Robin. I have too many things going on right now. I think of myself as being persistent, not necessarily talented.

Take care and have fun with the exchange.
