Making B Vitamins Palatable for My Child
November 13, 2008
I have a child with some emotional challenges including very high anxiety and stress. I’ve been wanting to try giving her some B vitamin supplements. She has to swallow a lot of pills that are supposed to help even out her moods. They have made our lives much better, but I would like to see if we could do more.
Since she’s had digestive problems since she was an infant, I’ve always suspected that her medical problems were at least partially related to a deficit in nutrients. Recently I did a lot of reading about B vitamins and decided to give them a try.
At first I bought a flavored liquid supplement that is given with juice or milk. She couldn’t stand it, therefore I couldn’t get her to try much more than a very small amount. So I went back and did some more research. I found a site that had a recipe for “Chocolate Bees“. My daughter loves chocolate, especially dark chocolate.
I should say that I changed the recipe. Besides changing from milk to dark chocolate, I changed the amounts of vitamins. The only B vitamin supplement I could find with a combination of all the B vitamins had Niacinamide in it. I looked in 3 different stores! The recipe calls for Niacin and no Niacinamide. I decreased the amount of Niacin in the recipe. I know Niacin causes a brief unpleasant flushing (your body gets warm and your face flushes). I didn’t want to give my daughter too much, so I ground up much less total (I used 500mg Niacin tablets) Niacin than stated in the recipe.
B vitamins are water soluable, so they flush out of your body every day. She only gets one Chocolate Bee per day. I don’t feel we have much to lose. If it works, we have a whole bunch to gain. My fingers are crossed that this will be helpful.

I’ll have to go find that recipe…and make it in an adult dose!

Thanks Denise, Kudzu and Michelle! My fingers are crossed as well.
Michelle, I take the liquid in a glass of juice in the morning. You don’t have to make the Chocolate Bees…then on the other hand if you like chocolate, this may be a way to feel really good about getting a chocolate fix!

Hi,
Saw this while searching for looking for soldered charms. Your daughter’s nervousness could stem from magnesium deficiency. If you suspect malabsorption, you might want to have her evaluated by a gastroenterologist. Best of luck to you.
