A Room With a View To Art ~ My Remodeled Studio
December 1, 2008

Some of you might have read a while back that my husband was working on an art studio for me. Well the studio is just about complete…at least complete enough that I could start moving my materials into the cabinets.

This studio is the third attempt to find a space for me to do some painting. My first space was in our poorly insulated shop building. I had to abandon it when the insulation filled with so much condensation that it fell down. My second studio was in the garage, but I never had enough light to paint. I finally gave up and started working wherever I could find space in the house.
My whole family, including me, was tired of having my art, craft and sewing stuff all over the house.

We finally decided to devote a space off the living room for a workspace. The room was originally a sun room that we had left “as is” when we did a huge remodel a few years back. We had left the old roof on that side of the house. The roof had started to leak. We needed to replace the roof and redo the interior anyway.

I tried to be as economical as possible. We found the all the cabinets, except the sink cabinet, on craigslist. They are used, in great shape and very solid. Even with one cabinet yet to be installed, I had enough room to store my sewing as well as my art and craft supplies. We bought the laminate floor from a discount warehouse. We reused many of materials left over from our previous remodel. The sink was a display model.
We’ve had the work table for a long time. I can’t even remember why we bought it in the first place.

With all that light the room makes a wonderful art studio. Originally the house had been designed as a solar home. That room had a heater vent for winter and two trees planted outside to shade it in the summer.
I still have a few things to move into the room. With the Thanksgiving holiday and a sore back, I decided to take a bit of time off.
I can’t wait to get back to my painting. The light is superb.

Sue, I am sew jealous!
I would LOVE to have a space like that for my sewing studio! That won’t happen in our current house, though. If we ever get to move west, maybe I’ll get a great sewing space….
Have fun using that wonderful new art studio!
Oh, yes, I expect to see your sewing machine installed in there the next time you show pictures.

Belinda,
Thank you. I feel very lucky to have this space.
My sewing machine is in the cabinet. I put it away when I’m not using it. Unlike you, I don’t sew enough to keep it out all the time. I need to make room for the other stuff I work on most of the time.
I imagine that table top will probably be full of beads, wires and game pieces first. I have some dolls and jewelry to finish. I’ll be sewing for Christmas again this year, so the machine will come out briefly.

Life would be so much easier if I had my own room to play in! Right now I have boxes scattered in every room of the house, and I can’t find anything. I slowed down some for Thanksgiving, and have been scanning photographs and documents and interesting bits of paper. And I’ve been playing with photoshop tinting old photographs of my family.
I’m jealous, but happy for you! Now you have lots of creative room

Thank you Kudzu and Michelle. I’m very lucky to have a husband who was a building contractor in his youth. We’ve taken on many remodeling and building projects over the years.
Before this room I was surprisingly productive considering I had to keep moving my pile so that everyone could eat at the table.
Kudzu, I love photoshopping! It makes altering and collaging so much easier.

I am so envious. There’s just not room where I live now. But I get a room in my dream house for crafts, fabric, etc.
