Black and Gold Russian Hat Side
I love crocheting in the evenings.  It’s a great way to relax.  I often start crocheting things in the fall and winter when we have less daylight.   I have a lot of single skeins of yarn, leftovers from other projects and bits and pieces I picked up at thrift stores, garage sales and estate sales.  I try to use up as much as possible.  Crocheting hats is a great way to use up some of my scrap yarn.

I decided to add a few hats as part of my hat donation package this year.   I had bought a couple of books to do crocheted hats over the summer and I wanted to make good use out of them.  In particular, I had bought one book just for the hat pattern, called Russian Hat.  I liked the onion dome look.

The first hat I made was this black, tan and and white one.  I’m using yarn from my stash rather than going out and buying yarn especially for the pattern.  The only problem with doing this is that the pattern sometimes needs to be adjusted a little.  I liked the finished hat, but I thought I could do better.
Book with Russian Hat Pattern
The “Russian Hat” pattern in the book above, fun & funky crochet by Sophie Britten uses a white yarn.  Since I had white yarn in my stash, I went ahead and made a white hat as well.  By the way, even though it isn’t advertise as a scrap yarn book, this book has many patterns that may help you use up your scrap yarn.
White Russian Hat
I thought the white hat would show the bobbles a little better than the black one.  I wasn’t disappointed, the bobbles do show up better in the white hat.
Side of White Hat
Unfortunately Maeve doesn’t have any hair, so she doesn’t fill out the hat as well as the model in the book.

I think I’ll pull out another book I bought this summer and make a few more hats before I send my hats off to a charitable organization.

I like the bobbles that you crocheted into it. They really show in the white one. Great job, Sue!

I really like that hat! Good idea to use up scraps. I need to do that. Right now I’m knitting some wool gloves for youngest son who’s going to Michigan for a week to visit friends.

Oh, and I love your craft room! Wish I had one.

  4. Thanks Cindy and Sharon. My head fills out the hat better than Maeve’s. It helps to have hair. ;-)

Sue, your hats are adorable! Love them. :)

  6. Michelle, her head is too slick. I’d end up having to realign the wig everytime I moved a hat on her head. It’s just not worth the bother. I think she looks lovely bald.

    Thank you, Denise!

Try post-it glue on the wig to hold it. Or tacky stuff, if it’s not a wig that you’re planning to wear.

My mom made crocheted hats for the local Adult Care Home until her arthritis got too bad. She’d buy yarn at the thrift shops, etc, too. It didn’t matter if she got odd colors or partial skeins.

  8. I know some people want Maeve to have hair, but I kind of like her without hair. She makes a good hat form that way. I can’t imagine ever wearing a wig…but you never know.

I have acquired yarn from thrift shops, yard sales and estate sales. Hats don’t take a lot of yarn. I, like your mom, can always mix a couple or more colors together.
