Dollar Store Challenge Part 3, Crafting with Kids
December 7, 2008

Beside anticipating having the kids home for the Christmas holiday, my daughter is having a party before the holiday. I thought I would give myself another dollar store challenge (or two…or more) to create some craft projects for kids.
Using the same concept as the jar snowmen from cloth paper scissors magazine November/December 2008, I decided to try to make some little snowmen using materials from the dollar store.
I went to the dollar store and bought a bunch of material, some of which is shown above. The glitter was 5 little bottles for $1. I also found beads, sheets of holiday stickers, ribbon stickers, and battery operated tea lights.
I decided to use the little bottles for snowman bodies. I had some material already on hand included chunky snow glitter, air dry clay, various beads, trims, jewels, brads and little plastic snowflakes.
Since I knew I was going to empty out the glitter bottles, I needed another project that used glitter. I had seen candle holders with glitter and beads glued to the outside. I went to our local Goodwill and bought little cup size canning jars for 29 cents a piece. I threw in a strand of little pearly beads for 99 cents while I was shopping for crafty things.
I painted gel medium on the outside of my canning jars and sprinkled them with the glitter from my bottle. After the glue dried, I added some gold tube beads using tacky glue. Since this particular jar had threads for screwing on a lid, I used some gold trim I had on hand to cover up the threads. The other canning jars I bought do not have threads.
The candle holder looks pretty and very festive with a little tea light inside.
Since this was a kid’s project, I decided I should add a kid-safe tea light. I found the tea lights 2 to a pack for a buck at the Dollar Store. They look like candles and the kids can “light” up the candle holder by themselves.
I bought a few other things. I have at least one other Dollar Store Challenge to write about.

Wow,great projects for little kids….and BIG kids like me! I have some small jelly jars and battery tea lights we bought at a yard sale,so the kids can make those during Christmas vacation.I love the plastic bottle snowmen, they can make these, too, and I love the glass jar snowmen, I was inspired and I’m putting together some pretties to make some for myself out of glass coffee jars. HossFly used W-D 40 to get the glue off of them.

Thanks Kudzu! I have Part 4 coming up tomorrow. We’re having a crafting and cookie decorating party for kids at my house this year. I’m trying to come up with a few projects.
I’ll remember the WD-40 next time I need to get glue off a jar.
