Handcrafted Bird Nest and Eggs Giveaway
March 16, 2009

Over the weekend I made some tiny blue and brown eggs with modeling clay, some ink and some acrylic paint. I’m ready to call it done.

Now that I finished my bird nest. I’ve decided to offer it as a giveaway to one lucky person…just in time for Easter and Spring. Yes, it’s a freebie! All you need to do is leave a comment on this blog entry. Make sure you give me an email where I can get a hold of you. I moderate all my comments from new sources, so if you’d like me to hide your info, please tell me. If you’re a regular, your comments will automatically be approved and I probably know how to find you.
I’ll enter all the people that comment on this blog entry from now until March 23, 2009. I’ll throw all the entries into the hat and draw a name which I’ll announce on March 24, 2009.
This is purely a housekeeping giveaway. I don’t sell the bird nests in any of my etsy stores. I’ve made a couple nests to go with some fabric bird sculptures I made. I made the nest above as a demo. Apparently a few people are interested in making nests for pet (live) birds. Don’t ask me if the bird’s like them. I keep hoping someone will make a nest and tell me if their bird likes it.

This is the same natural looking bird nest that I made for the 3-part tutorial I finished up last week. The nest is handcrafted with vines, moss, natural wool, twine and bark covered wire. It is very sturdy and will hold up well. The nest will make a great spring or Easter decoration.
Here’s the links for the tutorial:

…and the winner is
Thank you to everyone that participated.

I just popped in look at this great offer. The nest and eggs are awesome! I won’t submit my name because I understand it would be pricey to mail to Canada, but just wanted to comment on how much I like it
March 17, 2009 at 12:36 am
Thank you. The nest is pretty lightweight. Shipping to Canada wouldn’t be a problem.

Beautiful work, Sue!! What is that under the nest? It certainly completes the look.
March 17, 2009 at 6:40 am
In the top photo, I set the nest on top of a metal urn. The urn is not included. I have a matched set and I like them too much to give them away.

Your work is lovely, thank you for the invitation.
It is really beautiful. Thank you for posting the tutorial. I look forward to seeing more of your work and, maybe if I am lucky, a nest up close in person!
March 17, 2009 at 6:42 am
Thank you all!
Don-Mae, if you win the nest, you’ll have to go out and find yourself an urn.

Hey Melissa! Lucky you! You have a nearby friend with all the materials you need. I posted a tutorial and you can make them yourself if you don’t win.

Your birdnest is fabulous! It looks so realistic ~ not “too perfect” and not too messy ~ just the way a bird would do it. And who knew there was such a thing as barked-wrapped wire? Not me. Well, now I do and I’ll be looking for some REAL soon. And your eggs? Don’t get me started! Wish I could zoom in on those little babies … the shape and the colours are amazing.

I always try to imagine I am a bird when I make them. It’s a stretch. I’m an awfully big bird…maybe not as big the yellow guy on Sesame street.
March 17, 2009 at 8:29 pm
Wow that nest is wonderful! I love the wee eggs nestled inside.
I can already picture it on my windowsill

I always remember the 10 foot rule from the theater. All props should look real from a distance of 10 feet. The eggs are made from air dry clay, so they are very light weight.

Beautiful nest. I love natural twig decorations.

I was looking for nest instructions for a friend, and your picture looked so cool that I opened an account on wordpress just to have a look at the rest of your site! I recently discovered and did business on etsy, so I’ll have a look at you there as well. I’d love to win the nest to give as a gift to that friend, and I might even use it as a model for table centerpieces I’ll be doing for my nephew’s wedding in June… we’re using lots of natural things including twigs and branches, but I hadn’t considered bird nests! Thanks for being so creative!

WOW! I’ve been looking for a bird nest to go on door wreath and this one is just the perfect size and is simply gorgeous.
March 25, 2009 at 9:39 pm
I just found your instructions and the precious picture of the birdnest. I am very sorry I did not get to enter the contest. I hope to make at least one of these nests. Thank you so much for the instructions and I am so interested in seeing all the things you do. We do have doves that have built a nest on top of an exhaust for a cooktop. The exhaust is located under a carport. I do have pictures of the mom and one of her babies. They hatched about two weeks ago. The doves come back every year to their nest. My husband made a chicken-wire nest to hold their nest since it kept sliding off of the exhaust. It is very sweet to witness this miracle of nature. Thanks again for all..
