6 Pairs of Handmade Earrings for My Mom
May 11, 2009

I went to visit my mother on Mother’s Day. I brought her flowers and a couple of magazines. My mom and stepfather have been downsizing. I didn’t want to bring her anything that she would have to get rid of later.
While I was at her house, she told me she had lost one of the earrings I had made her a while ago. She asked me if I would make her more dangling earrings with earring wires. Although she didn’t say anything about her arthritis, I suddenly realized that the post earrings were becoming harder to put on.

I don’t think many handmade jewelry sellers realize that a whole non-online market exists for an ageing population. It’s tough to get backs on earrings and lobster clamps open with arthritic hands. It’s so easy to make some simple jewelry that works for an older group of women. These women do not want something complicated. They just want jewelry to match their outfits.
I made 6 pairs of earrings by simply adding beads to a headpin and adding a wire-wrap loop. I made my mom pairs in blue, green, red, pink and gold. I made 4 with silver wire and 2 with gold.
My mom is the second older woman to ask me to make her some earrings. She doesn’t shop online. She wants something that has a little dangle, but isn’t overloaded with beads or dangles to her shoulder. If you make and sell jewelry at craft fairs and brick and mortar shops, you might consider making a few pieces that are easy on the hands. Remember women of all ages where jewelry.
If you’d like to make your own earrings, I have a tutorial on wire-wrapping headpins, How to Do a Beaded Head Pin Wire Wrap.

Good reminder for jewelry-makers! I also prefer hooks to other types of earrings, but I don’t have any reason for it!

Hi Heather! Thanks for the input! I think a lot of woman prefer earring hooks.

I hit 60 this year and while I don’t have arthritis or anything to complain about, I don’t like to have to fuss with anything too complicated either. I don’t have time! I received a commemorative necklace from my workplace 2 years ago and it has the tiniest clasp – nearly impossible to open easily regardless of age. Your tip is a good one – also, we want our jewelry to stay secure without too much of a bother too.

Good point about the jewelry staying secure, Gina.
I’m not fond of those tiny clasps either.

That’s a great idea. Even the residents of nursing homes love to wear jewelry. But it’s so hard for them to put on. Ear wires make it easier for them and less time consuming for the nurses/cna’s to put them on.
Can you come up with an idea for storing them so they don’t get lost? That’s one of the main problems in nursing homes. Little pieces of jewelry without some sort of storage get lost easily. And there’s usually not enough room for a large jewelry box.

Storage would probably be a good idea as well. Six pairs of earrings in an organized storage box would make a great present.
I was going to make some bracelet holders. I think more people wear earrings than bracelets.

All those earrings are adorable. Lucky for your Mom that you are such a wonderful crafter and sweet daughter!
