The Two Paths
I spent a couple days last week sorting through my stuff  and taking much of it the thrift store.  I ran into a couple delightful public domain books that I had completely forgotten about.  They were just too precious to even considering giving them away.  I decided to share some of the wonderful illustrations from the books with you.  This week’s freebies are images from the public domain book, Safe Counsel or Practical Eugenics by B.G. Jefferis and J.L. Nichols published in 1922 by J.L Nichols & Co.

Before I start, I thought I would share the “Slogan” from the front of the book.  I have uploaded the illustrations for use in collage, mixed media and altered art.   Beyond finding the images interesting from a historical point of view, I have no desire to express judgement  about the moral content of the book.

From the page titled “Our Slogan”,  ”Fight social diseases with facts, not sentiments; study the problems of venerial[sic] infection for information, not sensation; combat social evils with science, not mystery.  This is the keynote of our campaign to train men, women and children to think straight along the line of social hygiene.”

The copyright free image is above is from  page 179 illustrating two life paths a boy may chose.
Courtship
Here’s an illustration from page 206.  I think it illustrates the difference between courtship in the past and courtship in 1922.
Twelve Signs of The Idiac
From page 313, here is an illustration of a bunch of folkloric remedies of the era.  I believe the indication is that only an idiot would believe the folk lore.
Quack Drugs
On page 272, this drawing accompanies an article on “Quacks and Quackery”.

The illustrations are from a pre-1923 public domain  book.  The images should be copyright-free.  All the illustrations have been uploaded to my flickr page.  They have been attributed to Creative Commons.  If you click on the image, you will be taken to the image on my flickr page where you can chose the size of image to download for free.
